Abstract
The article analyzes the essence of civil society and the rule of law in the light of two paradigmatic approaches:
subject-object and subject-subject. Traditions of interaction of these concepts are considered as factors of
modern civilization development. It is proposed to use the historical experience of public contract theories to
build a truly legal platform where the first place is the freedom of citizens. It is noted that civil society is possible
only if the obligations are fulfilled equally by all participants in legal relations.
